Miami, FL (AHN) - The Jamaican Broadcasting Commission has banned all sexually explicit music, and music that depicts violence, from the country's airwaves.

The ban went into effect on Feb. 6. It covers all songs meant to promote the act of "daggering," a dance move that simulates sexual intercourse.

The ban includes music played on both radio and television. DJs have no leeway in the ban because the songs can't be played even if the lewd lyrics are bleeped.

The commission is also looking into regulating so-called "soca" music, which contains lewd content, but with lyrics that are sexually suggestive, not explicit. Soca music is often played during Jamaican street carnivals. Jamaica has long been associated with reggae music, but in reality, that genre had lost popularity to "dancehall" and other more sexually explicit and suggestive types of music decades ago.

Perhaps the most fascinating story to hit the music industry since Radiohead digitally released In Rainbows over the internet for whatever price you want to pay, is the news that British big-beat duo Groove Armada have signed an exclusive deal with Bacardi B-Live, the musical affiliate of spirits brand Bacardi. The groundbreaking deal gives Bacardi the rights over Groove Armada’s live shows, new recordings, as well as their TV and radio appearances.

While Bacardi have been commissioning music all over the world for the past couple of years through their Bacardi B-Live sets, signing a band on an exclusive contract is clearly taking things a step further.

Yet what Bacardi are doing isn’t exactly as groundbreaking as it initially sounds. Global brands have often looked to musicians to cement their status as a “cool” product; the only difference is that in the current climate of struggling labels and plummeting music industry profits, the interdependence between brands and bands has been ever-increasing, as all sorts of new methods have been used in an attempt to reinvigorate the industry.

Many bands have ditched the middle-men (their labels) in order to connect directly with their fans. Before Radiohead, Prince had been releasing his music online for years, and no one these days is immune from the influence that Myspace has over the fall and rise of new bands.

Mainstream labels like Universal and Sony BMG have increasingly been relying on online sales, but when it is easier to sit at home and download new albums before they even hit the digital shelves of the iTunes music store, this appears to only be a short-term fix to a long-term problem. Hence the emergence of specialty labels that are attempting to satiate the demand of consumers that view an album release as something more than a collection of sounds that can be easily downloaded at little or no cost.

Cue the vinyl-only label Isomorph Records, an independent label set up by London designer, illustrator and entrepreneur Kate Moross. Isomorph is the world’s first art-driven record label, producing killer sleeves, bespoke vinyl and highly-designed limited edition runs. High production print processes create a specific aesthetic with value, that, as Moross puts it, is “like a series of artist prints that you can listen to.”

Isomorph Records taps into a niche market, and as the music industry travels through these un-chartered waters, many well-known brands that you wouldn’t normally associate with music are being presented with a unique opportunity to join the industry. If you think Bacardi signing Groove Armada is a tad peculiar, then take a deep breath, because National Geographic have recently released a music label under the not so original title of Nat Geo Music. And the list doesn’t finish there.

In late 2008, the all too sugary soft drink brand Mountain Dew started up a music “label” called Green Label Sound, which is solely based on single releases that can be downloaded for free on the accompanying website. Thus far, Chicago hip-hoppers The Cool Kids and Brooklyn duo Matt and Kim have released singles through the label. Yet all of this raises a couple of pressing questions: Are these artists just “selling out” to make a quick buck? And what exactly are bands and brands getting out of these deals?

By the current looks of things, only time will provide an answer. However, is signing to a brand “selling out” any more than signing to a major label. Since selling rum, soft drinks or magazines has absolutely nothing to do with selling records, artists may actually be allowed more of a creative license than with the more traditional method of signing on with a major label where record executives often push their own ideas upon artists.

Furthermore, in the case of Groove Armada, their deal with Bacardi ultimately means that their music reaches a broader audience, as they are penciled in to play at all of the upcoming Bacardi B-Live festivals, with their sets being filmed by Bacardi and released online. This may actually turn out to be a profitable career move, as with the collapse of album sales, touring has been the main source of income for many bands.

The other major source of income has been merchandising. So, who knows, we may soon see Groove Armada branded Bacardi rum. I mean, weirder things have happened; just last week I purchased a collar for my dog from the merchandise stall during a gig.

For many at least, close ties between bands and brands is potentially beneficial, as it provides brands with valuable marketing endorsements and bands with a non-restrictive environment to tour and release their music with.

Yet, how unrestrictive this environment turns out to be is as yet unclear. Close ties between corporate brands and artists could prove to be far from beneficial if these same brands start to use their artists for marketing strategies that the artists disagree with, yet are forced to endorse through contractual agreements. One only has to look at the latest James Bond film to see an example of corporate-artist ties turning sour. The White Stripes recorded the theme song for the film, yet the song was used - to the ire of front man Jack White - prior to the release of the film in a Coke advertisement without the permission of the artists involved.

Either way, the signs are clearly pointing away from the more traditional format of artists signing to labels, and if these new methods of releasing music proves to be successful in the long-term, then we could see a situation in the next couple of years where the only artists that sign on to major labels are the kind of artists that rely more on crafty record executives than musical talent to sell their albums.

Antoine "Wave" Garnier was a pioneering French Hip-Hop critic and documentarian who also served as an ambassador of American Hip-Hop to France. He even helped to introduce French rappers like MC Solaar to America, an effort that ripples today.

Sadly, Antoine died of a heart attack in Montreal, Canada on January 20, 2009. He was 43 years old.

Of Guadeloupian descent, Antoine grew up in Paris. As a youth, he came to admire not just African-American music and television, but what he could glean of African-Americans themselves, who struck him as more truly free than people of African descent in France.

A sociology student who majored in "American civilization," Antoine first came to America in 1986. He stayed here, on and off, for the next 10 years, during which time he made it his business to meet many of New York Hip-Hop's movers and shakers.

Among them was DJ Chuck Chillout. "Antoine used to come to KISS and wait for me outside the radio station," Chuck recalls. Struck by Antoine's clothing, which did not conform to standard American b-boy fashion, and by his super-serious demeanor, Chuck asked him, "Where you from, b?" The pair quickly became friends. In recent years, when Chuck toured Paris in the company of Tha Alkaholiks, Antoine toured him around the city for a week.

Antoine returned to Paris in 1996 and commenced writing about Hip-Hop for such publications as L'Affiche and Da Noiuz, as well as for American outlets like The Source and Vibe. Eventually, he was named editor-in-chief of Radikal, an influential French Hip-Hop monthly.

An intellectual who never neglected the sociological underpinnings of Hip-Hop, Antoine also began producing Hip-Hop programming for both radio ("Fun Radio") and television ("Camera Graffiti").

In 1998 Antoine published the first of his books. Entitled "Comprendre Le Rap," it is a compact encyclopedia of American rap from "A" (A Tribe Called Quest) to "W" (Wu-Tang Clan). It also includes a lexicon of rap slang.

Antoine's second book is an ambitious two-volume memoir/critique entitled "Souffle: Au Coeur de la Generation Hip-Hop," published in 2003. The first volume is comprised of tales of Antoine's New York sojourn, 1986-1996. The second volume covers the French scene from 1996 through 2003. Herve Mbouguen, reviewing "Souffle" for grioo.com, praised Antoine's "militant passion for black culture."

According to Chuck Chillout, Antoine grew less tolerant of French racism, and moved from France to Montreal several years ago. In 2006 he self-published his third book, "Les Supremes: La Revolution Vibracultic." Although it focuses on Motown in the Sixties, it is reminiscent of his other titles in its tracking of the influence of African-American culture on the world (including its French author).

Antoine married a woman from Quebec in December of 2007. Their son Alexandre, was born in February of last year. "Antoine was a nice dude. He always showed me love," says Chuck Chillout. "He will be missed."

Untouched East Germany flat found

The Soviet bloc state of East Germany existed for about 40 years

A flat apparently untouched since before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 has been discovered in the German city of Leipzig, German media report.

An architect who renovates buildings in eastern Germany unlocked the door last week and was shocked to find himself in a veritable East German time warp.

It appears the inhabitant of the humble flat fled in a hurry and shrivelled bread rolls still lay in a string bag.

Grocery brands from the Socialist state filled the kitchen.

"When we opened the door we felt like Howard Carter when he found the grave of Tutankhamun," Mark Aretz told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.

"Everything was a mess but it was like a historic treasure trove, a portal into an age long gone."

A wall calendar showed August 1988 and an empty bottle of Vita Cola, Marella margarine, Juwel cigarettes and a bottle of Kristall vodka were in the kitchen.

Plastic crockery and aluminium cutlery completed the picture of a bygone state.

The only foreign product to be found was a West German bottle of deodorant.

A zinc bath stood upright against a wardrobe. There was no toilet in the flat - the occupant had to use a communal one on the landing.

According to Mr Aretz, documents and letters in the flat suggest the occupant was a man aged 24 who was in trouble with the East German authorities, and who left in a hurry some time before the Wall came down in November 1989.

Santogold scores placements for new imprint

With Santi White, whose stage name is Santogold, Downtown Music Publishing struck publishing gold, syncing every single song on her debut album -- a rare feat.

"With Santogold, we've had Ford commercials, a major Budweiser commercial, play on 'Gossip Girl' and 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Entourage' several times, plus several videogames," says Justin Kalifowitz, president of Downtown Music Publishing. "This success was largely due to Downtown's ability to speak on behalf of both the publishing and the master rights. It's not commonplace to have both."

It just so happens that Santogold records for DMP's sister label, Downtown Records, making the 2-year-old music entity a one-stop shop of sorts.

This morning, HireCube's Aniq Rahman alerted us to a major change on YouTube. A growing number of videos now appear without sound and with a notice that these videos contained "an audio track that has not been authorized by all copyright holders." It looks like YouTube is starting to implement audio fingerprinting software that automatically removes licensed audio tracks. Update: Here is YouTube's official reaction.

YouTube always contacted its users when it was notified of copyright infringements, but now, it seems like this is an automated process. Predictably, the commenters on YouTube are outraged about this new policy.

The End of YouTube's Mashup Culture?

Most importantly, this move by YouTube, even though it makes perfect legal sense, might quickly put an end to the culture of remixes, mashups, and parodies on YouTube.

This new policy will also negatively affect a number of services that rely on YouTube for their audio content. Audiolizer, which we reviewed last month, for example, is, on the surface, a streaming music service, but actually gets its music from YouTube's vast catalog of music videos.

On Facebook, even dead people never die.

Given the youth of most of its user-demographic, death probably isn't something Facebook has really had to deal with. But as the Times' Michelle Slatalla discovers, it can haunt those left behind. Someone might be dead and mourned,

...but on Facebook, people live on — indefinitely — because the profiles of dead users are not routinely deleted. The company confers “memorial” status on deceased users’ accounts, having learned after the Virginia Tech shootings that many survivors want to grieve online by, say, posting goodbye messages on the walls of deceased Facebook users.

Slatalla's friend Steve, never much of a Facebook user, inserts himself into her life through birthday notifications and his smiling picture long after his death from cancer. Because, unless you take special steps, requesting that Facebook delete an account (probably not any bereaved person's highest priority) there's no "death" status that suddenly goes into effect. Says an FB rep, "'Many people who have somebody they’re still mourning find it very comforting and feel it keeps them connected to a loved one.'”

In a way, it makes a certain kind of sense. To a large degree, Facebook acts as a sort of second memory, keeping you vaguely aware of people from your dim past and abreast of far-away friends. It certainly aids in remembering quotidian things - birthdays, spouse names, current jobs - and, for good or ill, keeps you uniquely connected to the past. While, undeniably, there's something a little macabre about an abandoned Facebook page - and something very lonely about an unvisited one - a well-visited, tended profile with regular pokes and messages could become a sort of cut-rate 21st century mausoleum, and there are worse things.

Matt Price is a small, unassuming 29-year-old who graduated from the classics department at UC Berkeley, and wound up producing hit songs for rappers. His proudest accomplishment? The song "Wake It Up" by local kingpin E-40 and Senegalese R&B singer Akon. Price made the beat, a heavily-synthesized four-chord smear that bolsters Akon's chirpy alto against a backdrop of handclaps and metallic bleeps. It was one of the first tracks he ever sent to E-40, shortly after getting the rapper's e-mail address from a mutual friend, the Oakland emcee Shake da Mayor. One morning at 7 a.m., Price's phone rang. "Matt Price, you know who this is?" said the bubbly voiced rapper on the other end. "I like what you're doing," said E-40. "Keep 'em coming."

So with the summer here and sky rocketing gas prices I decided to fix my bike. One of the pedals had become stripped so I had to replace the crank shaft. I took a crank off of an old Mountain Bike and slapped it on my Miyata. Of course I had to keep the Mountain Bike gears on and thus added another gear...which is actually useless because it doesn't work with my derailer. However, it got me thinking about bikes and how some of my friends remove the gears from their bikes to make fixies. Is it practical in the Bay? Personally, I don't think so but with a fixie you can build some serious calf muscles, something I already posses. But where did this fixie fascination come from? I think it came from a tv personality we're all familiar with, Puck! from the Real World SF.

Think about it, most of the people ridin' fixies would be the MTV age 12 years ago when the RWSF was on the air waves. These people must have an affinity for Frisco because they live there. And I'm guessing that they learned about SF through programs like the Real World and thus adopted the coolest style on the show...Puck the bike messenger. This is no different than Gangsta Rappers assuming their ascribed position in pop culture based on the media distortion of black males on police shows like Cops or the local news.

In reality, Puck, ne David Rainey, was an aspiring actor and carefully crafted his character to gain popularity. And looking back at it, who would you rather be Puck or Judd? You don't see legions of cartoonists cartooning around the city.

Anyways, Puck now owns a custom motorcycle shop in LA and a granite business in Freakmont. The next big thing, granite counter tops. You heard it here first!

I'm from Davis, lifelong Kings fan, at least when their good. And if Kings fans needed anymore evidence that the 2002 Conference Finals were rigged, this is it. In a recent article on Yahoo an
ex NBA referee speaks about 2002 playoffs:

In one of several allegations of corrupt refereeing, Donaghy said he learned in May 2002 that two referees known as “company men” were working a best-of-seven series in which “Team 5” was leading 3-2. In the sixth game, he alleged the referees purposely ignored personal fouls and called “made-up fouls on Team 5 in order to give additional free throw opportunities for Team 6.”

“Team 6” won the game and came back to win the series, the letter said.

Only the Los Angeles Lakers-Sacramento Kings series went to seven games during the 2002 playoffs. And the Lakers went on to win the championship.

At the time, consumer advocate Ralph Nader and the League of Fans, a sports industry watchdog group, sent a letter to Stern complaining about the officiating in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals.

HeartBroken by T2 feat Jodie is a track from the emerging Bassline scene, the latest of the UK's dance music styles. The track peaked at #2 on the UK charts. The video is also popular among soccer fans because it features Premier League stars Micah Richards and Anton Ferdinand.

Movies: Intermission

The other day I was down at the Naz 8 theater in Freakmont watching Om Shanti Om a tale of a "junior artist" who is reincarnated as a Superstar. As in all Bollywood movies, Om Shanti Om had an intermission which created a nice separation for the two halves of the story. The movie was highly entertaining and I would recommend it...and eat at the all you can eat Bombay Garden down the street. But this is not a movie review. This is an editorial on something lacking in American movies and included in many foreign movies. Intermission.

When American movies were an hour and a half, intermissions didn't make a whole lot of sense. However, today movies are longer. I just saw No Country For Old Men and I missed the ending because I tuned out for a monologue. Something that could have been avoided had there been an intermission.

What I don't understand is why American movies don't have intermission. I understand that Theaters make most of their money on consesions. Wouldn't they like to have an intermission to sell more popcorn. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a break so that you could go to the bathroom and not miss any of the movie? Talk to your friends about how you think the movie will end?

I personally would like to see intermissions at movies. I'm not actually going to do anything proactive about it but passively I'll watch more Bollywood movies.

T-Pain is having a career year.

His chart topping singles with entertainers such as Akon, Bow Wow, R. Kelly, and Kanye West have dominated the air waves in '07. Now, at the 11th hour, or 11th month of his career year, T-Pain is finally getting his shine on NPR.

The interesting part of this story is the connection between T-Pain's Auto-Tuned vocal styling and his ringtone sales. I also like the tongue-in-cheek condescending tone the journalist takes when discussing T-Pain's music.

Also, why does it seem like NPR always covers a story at the end of a Pop Culture phenomenon's run?
